Seal-less Hydra-Cell positive displacement pumps were awarded DNV Certification in January 2010. They have clear advantages over established alternatives in a number of marine applications. Without difficulty or damage they can pump seawater and water carrying abrasive solids. They can operate reliably at pressures beyond 70 bar (2500 psi). They can run dry with no harm. They can pump viscous liquids, acids and caustics - and without premature wear, or risk of leaks, pump thin non-lubricating liquids.
The low-sulphur fuels required by new environmental regulations are thin and non-lubricating. Moreover their viscosity further reduces as they get hotter. Hydra-Cell’s seal-less design is the optimum technology for handling these new fuels, and keeping them safely contained. Energy and installation costs are also saved as other pump technologies may require expensive fuel cooling units to keep the viscosity of the fuel high enough not to cause problems.
All dynamic seals leak a small amount. Hydra-Cell's seal-less design keeps the ultra low- sulphur fuel safely contained. With no leakage, there is no need for equipment to monitor fuel leaks.
Emission control regulations also apply directly to the exhaust gases of marine engines. Urea, seawater and lime slurries are among the control chemicals reliably delivered to the exhaust by Hydra-Cell pumps.
High pressure capability and smooth flow, along with seawater compatibility have led to the widespread use of Hydra-Cell pumps in reverse osmosis systems on ships and offshore rigs for producing drinking water. The pump can also run dry, so an operator’s mistake will not damage it.
Raw seawater is often used in deck washdown and other cleaning operations at sea. Seal-less Hydra-Cell pumps can handle it with minimal filtration, can provide effective discharge pressure for cleaning, and also offer several drive options to simplify installation.
